Welding length of one electrode
Welding length of one electrode |
Filler metal consumption can be calculated by the formula for the number of pounds of welding electrode or welding wire needed to complete a given weld joint
Where P = WLE:
P = pounds of
electrode or wire required
W = Weight of welded metal
L = weld length (feet)
E = Deposition Efficiency Weight per foot of weld metal To
calculate the weight of weld metal, it is necessary that we consider the
following items.
1. Area of the cross-section of the weld.
2. The length of the weld.
3. Volume weld in cubic inches.
4. Weight of weld metal per cubic inch.
Factors we should consider when selecting electrodes include base metal type, joint fit-up, and welding position.

1. Never use a rod with a diameter greater than the
thickness of the base metal.
2. The electrode size refers to the wire size, not the
overall size of the rod.
3. Electrodes are very expensive so use them 1½” to 2” in
length. (Do not burn them on the handle of the bite).
